• Florida is a centre for adventurists as it has the longest urban linear trail starting at St. Petersburg and ending at Pinellas County. The trails stretch for nearly 47 miles. The Hawthrone trail is another trail that is usually explored on feet, cycles or on horses. It is under the aegis of the Rail to Trail program which converts areas that have abandoned railway tracks into walking, cycle or horse trails.
• The city of Venice in the central southern part of Florida has been tagged the Shark Tooth Capital of the World due to the large number of shark teeth that are found on its beaches The Shark Tooth festival is held in Venice every year. Florida has another “Venice’. Fort Lauderdale has a fully functional system of canals and so has rightly been called the ‘Venice of America’.
• Every year, since 1954, the world’s longest sailboat race – the Annual Mug Race – takes place on the Saint Johns River (which is often misspelled St. John Rivers instead of the official name Saint Johns River) in between the cities of Palatka and Jacksonville.
• Key Largo, the largest island among the islands that form the Florida Keys archipelago, on the southern coastal tip of Florida, has earned the name ‘Dive capital Of The World’ due to the living coral reef found here. The name was changed to Key Largo, after the success of a 1948 film starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall by the same name. The setting of the movie was similar to the locations in Key Largo, in the form of a propped up set. Thanks to the movie, the island became so famous that the name of the island’s post office in Rock Harbor was changed to Key Largo on the insistence of businessmen. This was done, so that the address would read Key Largo instead of Rock Harbor and thus be more recognizable, because of the movie’s success.
• The village of Islamorada (literally meaning Purple Island) is known worldwide as the Sports Fishing Capital of the World.
• The city of Delray Beach in Palm Beach County has the only museum dedicated to Japanese culture; The Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens.
